samsung’s next laptop could have a killer feature in the form of in-air gestures, if it’s latest patent filing is anything to go by.
Towards the end of September, according to Patently Mobile, Samsung filed patent application with the US Patent & Trademark Office that show designs to a form of gesture recognition and control for its laptops. As the patent application is just that, an application, there’s no hard and fast indication of when Samsung will create a laptop with the tech embedded into it. But the South Korean tech giant has already flirted with gesture recognition and control in its Galaxy smartphones dating back to the Galaxy S4 former flagship phone. So the company already has the technology to bring gesture control to laptops. At the same time, Samsung has a habit of making patent applications but then doing nothing with its tech ideas, so there’s an equally strong chance that Samsung notebooks with gesture control won’t ever crop up.
From the patent images, the gesture tech looks to be embedded behind the display for in-air gestures, while the trackpad also appears to have extra gesture recognition features put into it.
However, the question still remains as to why people would actually want an in-air gesture system for a laptop, when touchscreens are still relatively new in notebooks and the mouse, trackpad and keyboard combination still reins supreme as the way to interface with laptops to get things done quickly and efficiently.
